🚐 Discovering Thallon: Art, Outback, and Affordable Camping

In the heart of Queensland's outback lies the small but unforgettable town of Thallon, where painted grain silos meet sweeping skies and warm country hospitality.

During my recent travels, I stumbled across one of the region's best-kept secrets for budget-conscious campers — McGeever Recreational Grounds — located right next to the town's iconic grain silos. Whether you're a self-contained traveller or someone seeking powered comfort, this spot ticks all the boxes.

🏕️ McGeever Recreational Grounds – Free & Powered Camping

Camping at McGeever was a peaceful and enjoyable experience. The sites are spacious, level, and pet-friendly, with some shaded and drive-through options. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Unpowered Sites: FREE

  • Powered Sites with Water Access: $10 per night (Pay at the Francis Hotel)

  • Amenities: Toilets, hot showers, electric BBQ, dump point, and all-weather surfaces

  • Generators Allowed: 8am – 6pm

  • Pets: Welcome but must be leashed

Despite the heat during my visit, the $10 donation for a powered site was more than worth it for the comfort of running a fan in the van. It’s an ideal choice for solo travellers or families seeking a low-cost stopover with plenty of charm.

💡 Key Access: Contact Thallon’s Town Officer on 0427 259 095 or ask at the Francis Hotel.

🎨 Painted Silos & Outback Art

A highlight of camping here is the direct view of Thallon's Grain Silos, transformed into giant murals celebrating the region’s agricultural heritage. By day they’re impressive, but by night… magical. Once the sun sets, the silos glow under spotlights — a must-see.

On the walk to town, I also passed ironwork art installations that line the roadside, capturing the creativity and unique character of this outback gem.

🍽️ Local Hospitality at The Francis Hotel

No trip to Thallon is complete without a meal (or cold drink!) at the historic Francis Hotel. From the moment I walked in, I felt right at home. The staff were friendly, the food was hearty, and the atmosphere was pure country charm.

This is also the place to pay for your powered camping site — and have a yarn with the locals!

🐾 Meet William the Wombat

Keep an eye out for William the Wombat, a quirky statue tribute to Thallon's unofficial mascot. He’s a hit with kids, and a fun photo stop for travellers of all ages.
